First Committee Meeting

The inaugural meeting of the Trails and Forest Advisory Committee for Carolina North was held on Tuesday November 13, 2007 at the Carolina North Land Management & Trail Information Office in Chapel Hill.  The meeting had a very positive atmosphere and constructive interaction.  A presentation offered by the Forest Management Staff updated the committee members on the progress of the active management program thus far and brought out a lot of discussion about the opportunities and chalenges the program faces as it goes forward.

About the Trails & Forest Advisory Committee

Demonstrating UNC’s commitment to responsible stewardship and recognizing that the Carolina North Forest is a significant place in the life of the UNC, Chapel Hill, and Carrboro communities, Chancellor Moeser invited members of the community to serve on a Trails and Forest Advisory Committee for Carolina North in 2007.

Chaired by UNC's Executive Director of Real Estate & Development Gordon Merklein, the committee advises the Forest Management Team on policies and priorities that guide trail management, the control of invasive and exotic plant species, appropriate recreational use, and uses of the land as a living laboratory for students and teachers.

Other committee members include Mr. David Otto, Mr. Stewart Bryan, Dr. Luke Lucas, Ms. Joan Nesbit Mabe, Dr. John Randall and Mr. Mike Lyons.  Along with Carolina North Forest Management Team and UNC’s Facilities Services division, this group of individuals representing people that care deeply about the land works toward advancing the University’s mission and the goal of managing the Forest as a sustainable resource that provides aesthetic and recreational value to the community.
